Garrett banked a hard right into the parking lot of the doctor’s building with three minutes to spare before Lily’s mapping appointment. His well-ordered life was coming off the rails as his thoughts careened from one extreme to the other. Did he really have what it would take to be a parent to Lily? And how the hell would he deal with last minute travel in the future?

He stepped out of his car and met Rachel’s worried gaze. “Sorry I’m late. The meeting went a little long.” With a deep sigh, he ran a hand through his hair. “Tell me again why I didn’t stick with the boarding school idea.”

Rachel looked stricken, but her tone was calm and matter-of-fact. “Well, for starters, because Lily adores you and you want what’s best for her.”

Garrett glanced down at Lily, her silly, excited smile going a long way toward helping him switch his focus. She stepped in between them and grabbed their hands, leading them toward the office.

With a grin for her benefit, Garrett relaxed his shoulders and followed her lead. Rachel was right, of course, but he’d have to start thinking about a long-term solution. One that didn’t include her.

“She might not adore me after today. Do you know much about what will happen?”

Rachel glanced at him as they approached the glass doorway. She must’ve caught the worry in his voice. “She’s going to be fine. I went to a mapping session once and it was pretty amazing. There’s really nothing to be nervous about.”

“Lily doesn’t look nervous at all.”

She shot him a look. “Yeah, well. I wasn’t talking about Lily. I’m reminding myself. And you.”

Lily slipped her hands free and opened the door, standing like a proud sentry. Rachel’s light touch on his arm stopped him. “Lily’s not going to come out of the gate talking. You know that, right? Those connections are like railroad tracks. They’re going to take time to rebuild. She may even regress in what little speaking she’s done. Patience will be key. Real communication’s going to take time and effort, Garrett. But it’s no different than any other relationship. You’ll have to be committed to the process.”

Garrett was trapped by the seriousness of her gaze. Her words should’ve come off sounding like a lecture. But despite his intention to keep his distance, his respect for her grew. Even now, Rachel was proactively protecting Lily. “I know.” He paused. “I am.”

As Garrett followed them to the bank of elevators, his blood pressure climbed as concerns mounted. He’d pretty much left her in charge of the research once his initial decision was made. He wouldn’t have done that with a big business deal. Why hadn’t he paid more attention to all the materials Rachel read? Why hadn’t he asked her more questions?

He punched the button to take them to the fourth floor then folded his arms and glared at Rachel. Why hadn’t she made sure he was more prepared? He had about thirty seconds for a crash course.
